Feminist Frequency: Twitter vs Female Protagonists in Video Games → femfreq.tumblr.com

femfreq:

Thanks #XboxOne #E3 press conference for revealing to us exactly zero games featuring a female protagonist for the next generation.

Above is a tweet I made this afternoon in reaction to the fact that none of the games presented at Microsoft’s Xbox One E3 press conference featured female protagonists. Below are some of the Twitter replies to that observation which exemplify the male privilege and male entitlement endemic in the gaming community today. This is also a window into what it’s like to be a female video game critic on twitter.

Gravel Metric 2013.

Fourth annual. My fourth appearance.
Unlike the first and third years, it was not oppressively hot. Somewhat like the second year, there was a prediction of rain.
Also unlike the first three editions, there was no video invite and the course was unshared until sign-in….

Well said. Thats basically how my day went. I went crazy hard off the front, couldn’t hang. Got stopped in the Forest Preserve with like 30 other riders trying to figure out what way to go until Chad showed up (it was his route).

Bonked at like mile 58 due to cramping. Last ten were hell for me. SO MUCH FUN!!

I wonder if we were in the same group that got lost in the state park. Or did multiple groups get lost? That was the one section where I felt the course really suffered from lack of markings.

Might’ve been. Are you the guy with a Twin Six metal kit and lower leg tattoos? Because I definitely ride through the forest preserve with that dude.
I heard later that some citizen removed signage that was put up.

Nope - tall dude in a yellow jacket and a Dan’s Comp kit, only the shorts of which were visible. Riding a titanium Salsa La Cruz. I think I ended up riding with the Twin Six Metal guy towards the end - maybe the last 15 miles or so.

Bummer about the removed signage. When I was there the only sign was the one pointing toward Houghtby Road and it took the group a while to find that. I don’t know whether we backtracked or just took a bunch of random roads or what happened.
